STOP PRESS (can you say that on a web-site?)
Anyway, this is most urgent. Oak Lawn Library Friends has an important and
urgent opportunity to make money, and you can help. Please drop what you are
doing and visit this link: Building a Better Branch. With
your generosity, we can earn as much as you can contribute, with a special
limitation. You must do it on Wednesday, 20th May 2009. All the details are
there. Please, please, please look at this right now, and make a note to visit
and contribute on the 20th. Your contribution will confer membership in Dallas
premier Library Friends organization, and will support the Oak Lawn community in
what we know to be dire financial times.
Oak Lawn Library Friends
80th Anniversary Gala,
the saga continues!
|
From the President:
In
1929, the Dallas Public Library opened a branch in Oak Lawn with 1,000 books
for children. The next year, books for adults were added. Since that time,
Oak Lawn Library has moved a number of times and with each new location the
branch has added more materials.
Today, our branch continues to meet the needs of a very diverse
neighborhood. We serve everyone with a wide collection of books, DVDs, CDs &
audio books to name a few of the items in our branch. This year, we have
added a monthly art show of local artists to add a new dimension to our
service to the community. In October, we will begin showing movies at the
library.
On
April 25, Oak Lawn Library Friends (OLLF) hosted a party to celebrate the
80th anniversary of Oak Lawn Library. It is the second oldest branch in
Dallas. There was live music from the Booker T Washington string quartet,
food, drinks, and a silent auction. All proceeds will be invested in further
improving our branch.
I
have only been using this branch since 1983, but I can see significant
improvements in our library over those 26 years. Since OLLF have gotten
involved in raising money and providing volunteer support, I think we have
made our library even more inviting and more like a home than a public
building. I look forward to making our branch even better in the decades to
come.

O, Volunteers - not O, Pioneers
The life blood of OLLF is volunteers. Those on our board spend many hours
not only shelving books, but in creative thinking, raising funds for our
branch.
Two board members have
elected to resign, and their absence will be keenly felt. Helen
Lansburgh has been here from the start, or very nearly so, and her
gentle wit and thoughtful process have contributed greatly.
Anna Urban
came to the board later, and had great professional skills, which helped
us a lot. Now these ladies are gone and there is a vacancy around the
board table.
If you are a member and
have never come to the board meetings, please consider coming, for an
inside look at all the ways in which OLLF supports Oak Lawn Library.
One
important volunteer opportunity coming up is: membership sales on Election
Day, 9 May 2009. We staff a table in the lobby, selling calendars and
memberships, soliciting contributions.
Our precinct is
politically active, and interest over the municipal elections is certain
to bring a good turn-out.
The very next weekend, 16th
May 2009, is our annual staff appreciation brunch. Home-cooked food is
coupled with a generous contribution from Kroger to make a super "thank
you" for our hard-working staff, and an extra hand is always welcome!

Arts & Entertainment
The truth is out! Oak Lawn Library is developing a reputation as artist's
Mecca in Dallas!!
We have an on-going artist
rendering every month, most recently, Barbara Carr in March and Maria
Ávalos in April, as well as a special program called Through the Eyes of
our Children.
Quite a number of photos
were submitted to the newsletter, and sadly, there is not a good way to
share them all. HOWEVER, go to our web-site, and there will be examples
and galleries of each program.
If you know of a budding
artist, have them get hold of Christina Worden, and see when there's an
opening for new art.
Remember, this is free of
charge, both exhibiting and viewing. Speaking of exhibition, have you ever
wondered who does the display case in the front lobby?
Answer: YOU - It doesn't
matter if your topic is art, collectibles, or history, see Ray Sablack at
the Reference Desk, and share your collection or interest with the
community!
Lastly, to appeal to
the literary types, a plug for
Writers'
Garret,
which has programs, holds classes, and sponsors workshops for those who
write or would like to write. Give it a look!

| Further on the arts scene, a
few words from our Branch Manager, Christina Worden:
The Red Brick Gallery
at Oak Lawn Library
Everyone is invited to come to Oak Lawn
Library to check out books, music CDs, and DVDs, as well as checking out the
monthly art exhibits. Each month a different artist will display their
works. The art is all wonderful and ranges in style, subject, technique and
media from pop art to expressionism to realistic and more.
The Gallery is booked through September,
2009. In October, OLLF will sponsor the Fourth Annual Oak Lawn Library Art
Show. I hope all will help get the word out that our branch is a showcase
for art and place for artists to share their creativity with the community.
Library Display Case
Do you have a collection of some kind that
you would like to display for library visitors to enjoy? Please consider
bringing your salt shakers, handiwork, post card collection etc. to the
library to place in the glassed in display case in the lobby.
Contact Ray Sablack on 214-670-1359 and book
your display for a month.

April
Showers bring May Flowers, June Humidity, & July Mosquitoes. Come inside and
enjoy our gallery!
Elizabeth K Bogard
will open a solo art show at Oak Lawn Library on Monday May 4th.
Bogard, a Texas
artist, strives to express the unfathomable mystery of life in her work.
Provocatively imbibed with mystery, the works reflect the artist's deep
relationship with the subject.
She starting producing
art after a career in corporate business. She is self-taught and also
studies figure drawing and painting with various teachers.
Bogard creates in
several styles, including abstract, non-representational, surreal,
expressive, semi-abstract, and figurative. Starting out with drawings in
charcoal and graphite, the artist quickly progressed to collage, mixed media
and, finally, to painting.
This show
is one of a series of monthly art shows featuring local artists sponsored by
OLLF. This show will run thru the end of May.

Our
Customer service is tops!
Requested
anything lately? Dallas Public Library has made a change in how your
requests are managed once they are received. All requested items are
available for self-service pickup. What does this mean to the staff and
customers? This new process allows for staff to provide a quicker, more
efficient transaction from start to finish. And it means less wait time in
line waiting to check out for all of our customers those with requests or
not. This change has been well-received by customers and staff alike.
