Oak
Lawn NEIGHBORHOOD MEETING
FIND OUT how Dallas Public Library budget CUTS
Will affect Oak Lawn Branch library and you
CALL TO ACTION NEIGHBORHOOD MEETING
The proposed 2010-2011 City of
Dallas budget will drastically
cut funding and staffing for the Dallas Public Library system
* Branch hours will remain the staff but half the
staff will lose their jobs
* Due to reduced staffing, programs such as story time, Summer Reading
Program, and other planned outreach could be eliminated
* The overall budget vs 2 years ago is reduced by
60%
* The cuts are so severe that the library will lose accreditation
* Loss of accreditation will make us lose state and Federal funding
* The materials budget will be continue to be cut which will mean fewer new
materials and longer wait times for materials you want.
* These wait times could be as long as 8 years!

WE LOVE ART!
Oak Lawn Library
loves
art! The library hosts works of local artists on a rotating basis. From June
10 to July 6, the work of Manuel Barosa was featured. In July, local pop
artist Robb Conover will bring us back to yesteryear with comic book heroes.
Our Annual Art Show
will be held in September & October. A call for painting and photography
submissions will go out in August, with intake on Saturday, Sept 25th.
The opening reception
will be Wednesday evening, September 29th
from 6:00 - 7:30 pm. Works will be displayed from September 29 through
October 30.
The show will be
judged by a local art expert on Tuesday, September 28. Art work will be hung
the following morning. |

Children’s
Programs:
Oak Lawn Branch needs your help. The Summer Reading Program has begun and
school is out. If you could spare a few hours a day during
the week signing up children and awarding prizes, you would find it
rewarding and fun. If you know of others who might want to do participate
let me know as well. Teenagers who are at least 14 can be volunteers. Please
call me if you can do this and I will give you details.Ray Sablack

Library
Supporters Conference July 23 - 24
The 2nd annual North Texas
Conference for Library Supporters has been rescheduled for July 24 with the
Friday evening event to be held July 23 at the Decatur Civic Center, 2010 US
Highway 380 W, Decatur TX. Its about 65 miles northwest of our library
For
up-to-date Conference Schedule and Session & Speaker Descriptions, visit
Agenda. To see the
flyer for each of the two events, visit
Flyer.
Why should you
be interested? Two good reasons are - to network beyond our service area,
and possibly learn tips and skills for dealing with our on-going budget
crises. Also, to show off OLLF and encourage others to build and grow their
organizations. You may not know it, but you are part of a dynamic
organization which is a leader in Library Friends organizations!
Contact our
library manager, Christina Worden on 214-670-1359 or our president, Stan
Aten on 214-941-8114. Either will be able to give more info, but note this
event is looming on the horizon!

If you can read this, thank a librarian!
Following is an excerpt
from Friends of Dallas Public Library. To put things in context in case
you never see a newspaper, the library system is virtually under attack by
the budgetary process.
"Friends of Dallas Public
Library have contributed funds to have bumper stickers and buttons printed
for this long, hot summer of campaigning. The Dallas Morning News has
helped fuel the fire and people are upset! We've received many phone calls
and emails of support.
"Packages of buttons and
bumper stickers have been put together and will be mailed to branches.
More are being printed in the coming weeks and will be sent. Wear them
proudly! We hope to see these at the town hall meetings in August and all
over town before then!"

Alternatives to
raise consciousness about the importance of libraries (!)
24-Hour Read-In Protests Cuts to
Libraries excerpted from the New York Times
click ->
NYTimes Library Revolt!
for the full story
"It was the
literary equivalent of a filibuster, a bookworm’s take on 1960s-style
protest. Aliqae Geraci called libraries “a huge support system for the
unemployed.” A 24-hour stream of sentences and stories, spanning the canon
from George Eliot to “Gossip Girl,” flowed from dozens of book-loving New
Yorkers this weekend who were concerned about austere budget cuts to
libraries proposed by City Hall.
"Not
typically ones to raise their voices, librarians staged an overnight read-in
on the steps of the Brooklyn Public Library on Grand Army Plaza to criticize
the city’s plan to close 40 branches by month’s end, and
to reduce hours and employees
at those that remain. The event’s slogan:
“We Will Not Be Shushed.” |

Digital
Dallas, a New Digital Service
On May 11, the
Dallas Public Library launched a terrific new service for library customers.
Overdrive, which can be accessed through the library’s website
access to new free e-Books, audio books, music and video digital downloads.
Once
downloaded, digital titles can be enjoyed on a computer or transferred to
supported mobile devices; many audio titles can also be burned to CD. Titles
will automatically expire and are returned to the digital collection at the
end of the lending period, thus eliminating late fees. |
The Digital
Bookmobile, a 74-foot long vehicle operated by OverDrive, visited Oak Lawn
Library on May 12. The Bookmobile came to Dallas as part of a national tour
to raise awareness of libraries’ electronic resources.
Inside the
one-of-a-kind vehicle, readers of all ages learned how to download digital
material from the library through interactive demonstrations and
high-definition instructional videos.
The vehicle is
equipped with broadband Internet-connected PCs, high definition monitors;
premium sound systems and a variety of portable devices, all of which help
visitors explore the Library’s download services.
Interactive
learning stations give visitors an opportunity to search the library’s
digital media collection, use mobile devices and sample digital books, music
and video.
