Check-Out/Returns

Most items may be borrowed for 21 days, with the exception of videocassettes and DVDs which are borrowed for seven (7) days. Reference materials do not circulate. With the exception of record albums, you may return material to any library location. All library locations have an after-hours book return chute. At the Central library, 15 minutes free parking is allowed to return materials. Items may be renewed by calling any Dallas Public Library during open hours. Renewals may be made on-line at most hours, except 11pm to 7 am Dallas Public Library web-site (Dallas Public Library)

Children's Program

Story times for pre-school children are presented Fridays from 10:00-10:30 am. For children in day care facilities, you may call to schedule a visit by the children's librarian who will present a story time on-site. School tours are also available. For school-aged children, there is a wide assortment of books including Spanish and bilingual materials.

Collection

The Branch currently houses over 46,000 volumes, including books, plays, reference materials, magazines, CDs, audio books, video cassettes, and DVDs. From the latest best sellers, to books in Spanish and Vietnamese, our library tries to ensure that every resident can find something interesting to read at the library. The collection includes the latest Oscar-winning films, travel programs, and children's movies, including popular Disney titles.

The CD collection at this branch has an emphasis on classical and opera music, however, there is also a generous sampling of popular music and movie soundtracks. The CD collection is funded by Oak Lawn Library Friends' recycling center.

Daily newspapers include the the Dallas Morning News, USA Today, the Wall Street Journal, and the Sunday edition of the New York Times. Back issues of magazines can be checked out.

Company Card

A library card may also be issued to any company in the City of Dallas. The company is responsible for all material checked out on the card. To obtain a company library card, a request, signed by an officer of the company, on business letterhead, should be sent to:

As many as ten (10) cards may be requested. All cards issued in the name of the business are valid for one year. The cards will be mailed within one week and are honored at all Dallas Public Library locations.

Computers

There are eight public access computers at this library. All eight public computers have Internet access. There is also a computer with links to HIV/Aids information, as well as a terminal for the library catalog.

ESL and GED

GED classes are held on Friday afternoons from 1:00-5:00 pm.

English as a Second Language (ESL) tutoring sessions and self-paced ESL training via computer are available by appointment. Registration with the ESL coordinator is required for participation. (see more in a separate section)

Oak Lawn Branch Library is open on the following schedule:

Monday – Wednesday     10:00 am - 9:00 pm

                       Friday     10:00 am - 5:00 pm

                   Saturday      10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Late Fees and Lost/Damaged Materials

A fee is charged when an item is not returned on time.

Fines per item per day:    Book                                   $0.30

                                     Cassette tapes and CDs         $0.50

                                     Videocassettes and DVDs      $1.00

If an item is lost or damaged beyond repair, a service charge will be added to the retail price of the item.

Library Cards

Library cards are free to residents of the City of Dallas. This card allows residents to check out any material, and to have access to telephone reference information.

Non-Resident Cards

Non-residents may purchase Dallas Public Library cards and customize the service they need.

Cards are available for a fee of:      $15 (5 items)

                                                   $40 (15 items)

                                                   $150 (unlimited number of items per year)

Note: Purchasing a Dallas Public Library card does not entitle non-residents to telephone reference services.

Requests/Reserves

If the desired material is checked out, we will reserve the material for you. Additionally, circulating materials can be requested on-line through the Dallas Public Library web-site Catalog. When the item is available, notification can be made by e-mail, telephone, or US Mail.

Special Collection

With over 2,000 titles, Oak Lawn Library has the largest collection of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender material of any library in the City of Dallas.
